DEEP TAN HOLLOW SCENE

Hackney's deep tan spooked us with their sultry yet somewhat disturbing recent video for 'camelot' just last week. Back with a new taste of their forthcoming EP creeping speedwells, 'hollow scene' is arguably their poppiest cut to date. Not compromising any of the angular darkness that we've come to love them for, bleating electronics give rise to catchy top lines that secrete healthy amounts of 90s nostalgia. Lyrically relatable to anyone's that's felt frightened or overwhelmed by the oppressive systems that determine our reality, this is perhaps most obviously felt in the chorus hook "I wanna say something about it, call it out but I'm paralysed". The band explain: “hollow scene is about the feeling of having to move through life with a certain level of detachment in order to function. Gatekeeping empathy for the sake of an easy life, if you will. It’s a pretty draining business, though, and can make any real search for meaning feel futile. Meursault was wrong and he was right. Robert Smith, however, is always right.” Listen here now. -Holly Mullineaux
